The AdventHealth Nicholson Center recently earned the Comprehensive Accredited Educational Institution (AEI) accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Located in Celebration, Florida, the Nicholson Center was the only training center in the Greater Orlando area and one of only two institutions in Florida to achieve this five-year designation. The ACS accreditation program was established in 2005 to promote patient safety by using simulation to support the lifelong learning of surgeons, surgical trainees and other healthcare professionals; to enhance access to contemporary surgical education; and to advance scholarship in simulation-based surgical education.
The Nicholson Center initially earned accreditation as a Focused AEI in 2018. After a multi-level review process completed in 2023, the Center’s accreditation level was upgraded to Comprehensive AEI, the highest designation awarded. The Comprehensive accreditation requires a broader spectrum of curricula and target audiences along with an academic/research program.
Expanded Opportunities
This Comprehensive AEI accreditation provides the Nicholson Center with several opportunities:
- Share best practices in the areas of curriculum design, assessment, faculty development, research and technology with centers at the forefront of simulation-based surgical education and training.
- Jointly advance scholarship and educational goals through multi-institutional research studies and collaborative projects.
- Interact with other multidisciplinary professionals worldwide to seek support for delivery of education and training programs.
“The ACS established this accreditation program to ensure delivery of the highest quality surgical education, and we are honored to earn their top designation,” shares AdventHealth Nicholson Center Chief Medical Officer Scott Magnuson, MD. “We are one of the nation’s largest and most experienced medical learning and simulation incubation centers, and this accreditation recognizes our commitment to combining advanced technology, innovative educational programs, and hands-on training with the brightest minds in medicine to help shape the surgical leaders of tomorrow."
Founded in 2001, the AdventHealth Nicholson Center has trained more than 50,000 physicians from around the globe on leading-edge clinical and surgical techniques.
