AdventHealth Nurse Helps Man Who Collapsed at Broadway Show
Inside the August Wilson Theater in New York City, Lea Michele was belting out the final number of "Funny Girl" when a man in the audience suddenly collapsed.
Luckily there was a nurse in the audience: Nicole Horochowski, an ICU night-shift nurse at AdventHealth Orlando who was on vacation seeing family.
"That's what happens when you take your nurse pledge and you get pinned. You are always a nurse — on the clock, off the clock, Christmas Day, or any other random day of the year. You are always a nurse," Horochowski told People magazine.
As the show carried on, she went to help the man, whispering to him as Lea Michele sang onstage, "'Can you talk to me? Can you squeeze my hands?' And he didn’t respond. That’s when you know this person needs to go to a hospital." So, she started delegating, "'I need you to call 911. I need you to get me an AED. I need you to get me any medical supplies you have.'"
Horochowski stayed with the man until paramedics arrived about five minutes later. She said she felt it was her duty as a nurse to help him.
"Nurses will always be there for you whether we’re out and about or we’re here doing our shift," she said. "We truly are never clocked out."
