DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— AdventHealth physicians and care teams will again provide physicals for select students in Volusia County public middle and high schools at Daytona International Speedway.
The four-day event, scheduled for April 12 to 15, is open to Volusia County Schools student athletes and cheerleaders, as well as ROTC, band members, and firefighting academy students. All of those groups, with the exception of band, require a physical evaluation for participation. Band members are welcome but are not obligated to receive a physical.
“We are incredibly grateful for the strong partnership we have with AdventHealth,” VCS Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin said. “AdventHealth continues to ensure that our students are healthy and whole by providing a variety of vital health services, such as these free physicals.”
“Conducting these physicals is one of the many ways we honor our commitment to care for student athletes and it is something our team of physicians, staff and nursing students look forward to each year,” said Audrey Gregory, president and CEO of AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division – North Region.
Last year, more than 1,500 Volusia County students participated in the free sports physicals, which also include heart screenings. These heart screenings can be critical as sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among high school athletes.
For one teenage soccer player in Ormond Beach, AdventHealth’s annual sports physicals event led to a potentially life-saving discovery of a congenital heart condition.
“While we always hope the students receive good news, we also hope these physicals help give families peace of mind as their children prepare for the new school year and upcoming sports seasons,” Gregory said.
Hours for the event are:
Wednesday, April 12 | 5 pm to 9 pm
Thursday, April 13 | 5 pm to 9 pm
Friday, April 14 | 5 pm to 9 pm
Saturday, April 15 | 9 am to 4 pm
Appointments are required and can be made online until April 5. To make an appointment, visit VCSSportsPhysicals.com. For more information or questions, families can email vcssportsphysicals@groups.volusia.k12.fl.us.
